Despite complex dynamics, streaming music has flourished in Mexico. This chapter delves into the evolving landscape of music streaming in Mexico by addressing four key areas. The first section examines Mexico’s vibrant and diverse music cultures, comparing their consumption trends in the streaming era with those in the United States and other Latin American countries. This comparison is supported by empirical research that illuminates these dynamics. The second section focuses on the unique characteristics of regional Mexican music, particularly the emergence and popularity of corridos tumbados, a contemporary subgenre that merges traditional corridos (narrative ballads) with elements of trap and hip hop. In the third section, we explore the shifts within the Mexican music industry prompted by the advent of streaming platforms and aggregators, examining changes in distribution and commercialization strategies, with a focus on corridos tumbados. The fourth section presents the perspectives of creative workers in the music industry, drawing on insights from our interviews.

A pesar de su compleja dinámica, la música en streaming ha florecido en México. Este capítulo profundiza en el panorama cambiante del streaming musical en México abordando cuatro áreas clave. La primera sección examina las vibrantes y diversas culturas musicales de México, comparando sus tendencias de consumo en la era del streaming con las de Estados Unidos y otros países latinoamericanos. Esta comparación se apoya en investigaciones empíricas que ilustran estas dinámicas. La segunda sección se centra en las características únicas de la música regional mexicana, en particular el surgimiento y la popularidad de los corridos tumbados, un subgénero contemporáneo que fusiona los corridos tradicionales (baladas narrativas) con elementos del trap y el hip hop. En la tercera sección, exploramos los cambios en la industria musical mexicana provocados por la llegada de las plataformas de streaming y los agregadores, examinando los cambios en las estrategias de distribución y comercialización, con especial atención a los corridos tumbados. La cuarta sección presenta las perspectivas de los trabajadores creativos de la industria musical, basándose en las conclusiones de nuestras entrevistas.

Netflix, as a tech company, is currently the largest global streaming platform challenging traditional US studios. This article analyses Netflix’s transnational business strategies disrupting such status quo by focusing on one local example: Mexico. Literature on Netflix has identified some of the transnational strategies studied here, this article adds to the discussion the use of local elements to infiltrate the power hub of Hollywood. By using the holistic scope of Political Economy, this research presents an integrated examination of: (a) the structural conditions of the Mexican audiovisual system in which Netflix is immersed; (b) the tech company’s expansion strategies; (c) the case of the movie Roma as a pivot-like tactic to push forward different company goals. The article argues that Netflix, by setting a new form of audiovisual circulation through innovation technology, has understood the key areas to break the audiovisual market value chain allowing it to gain global dominance.
