Roderik Smits

Roderik Smits es profesor ayudante de Medios e Industrias Creativas en el Departamento de Medios y Comunicación de la Universidad Erasmus de Rotterdam (Países Bajos). Roderik cuenta con más de 10 años de experiencia docente e investigadora en universidades del Reino Unido, Alemania, España y los Países Bajos. Ha desarrollado una sólida experiencia en las industrias del cine y la televisión, con especial atención a los procesos de política, producción, distribución, exhibición y streaming.

Roderik es coeditor de European Cinema in the Streaming Era (Palgrave Macmillan, 2024) y autor de Gatekeeping in the Evolving Business of Independent Film Distribution (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019). Su trabajo también se ha publicado en Media Industries, Poetics, Studies in European Cinema, Cultural Trends, NECSUS, Arts and the Market, Flow Journal, The Velvet Light Trap y Journal of British Cinema and Television.

Roderik es doctor por la Universidad de York (Reino Unido) y ha trabajado en varios proyectos de investigación colaborativa a gran escala en Europa. Entre ellos, Mediating Cultural Encounters Through European Screens (MeCETES), financiado por HERA (2013-2017); Beyond the Multiplex, financiado por AHRC (2017-2021); y Screen Agencies as Cultural Intermediaries, financiado por AHRC (2018-2020).

Posteriormente, obtuvo becas postdoctorales para llevar a cabo su proyecto de investigación Online Platforms and Film Circulation (2020-2024). Entre ellas, la beca Postdoc Network Brandenburg en la Film University Babelsberg (Potsdam, Alemania) y la beca Marie-Curie en la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (España).

Roderik Smits is Assistant Professor in Media and Creative Industries in the Department of Media & Communication at Erasmus University Rotterdam (the Netherlands). Roderik has over 10 years of teaching and research experience across universities in the UK, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands. He has developed strong expertise in the film and television industries, with particular attention to processes of policy, production, distribution, exhibition and streaming.

Roderik is co-editor of European Cinema in the Streaming Era (Palgrave Macmillan, 2024) and author of Gatekeeping in the Evolving Business of Independent Film Distribution (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019). His work has also been published in Media IndustriesPoetics, Studies in European Cinema, Cultural Trends, NECSUS, Arts and the Market, Flow Journal, The Velvet Light Trap and Journal of British Cinema and Television.

Roderik holds a PhD from the University of York (UK) and has worked on several large-scale, collaborative research projects in Europe. These include Mediating Cultural Encounters Through European Screens (MeCETES), funded by HERA (2013-2017); Beyond the Multiplex, funded by AHRC (2017-2021); and Screen Agencies as Cultural Intermediaries, funded by AHRC (2018-2020).

Subsequently, he was awarded postdoctoral fellowships to undertake his research project Online Platforms and Film Circulation (2020-2024).
